The famous Versace mansion on Miami’s prestigious Ocean Drive, sold recently for 41.5 million to the to a business group that includes the owners of the Jordache denim label. The price seemed like a bargain considering the home was originally listed for $125 million in June 2012 then later reduced to $75 million. The 23,000-square-foot notoriously opulent home, known as Casa Casuarina, has 10 bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a huge courtyard and a 54 foot-long pool lined with 24 karat gold. Gianni bought the home at the height of his fame in 1992. He apparently spent 33 million on renovations and added another wing. Sadly the home is also the location of the legendary designer’s tragic murder when he was shot on the front steps in 1997. The Versace family sold the property three years later.
Gianni surrounded himself with the world’s elite, including royalty, movie stars, singers, models and socialites. And he liked to host them all at his famously fancy parties. Many legendary soirees (that word seems appropriate in this case) took place at the mansion and there are some awesome stories about the fabled events. Cindy Crawford said in an interview years ago that when you were invited to one of his parties, many of the guests also stayed at the mansion. When you got to your room, there would be a dress from his latest couture collection custom fit to your dimensions. And you were of course expected to wear it for dinner. One party in particular included Gianni’s friends such as Madonna, Sting, Elton John, Princess Diana, Princess Caroline of Monaco, a of number famous socialites and some of Gianni’s favourite models at the time including Cindy, Christy, Naomi and Linda. I’m practically drooling just thinking about it. Can you imagine being at that party? I would be in heaven.
Another legendary story is from a party Donatella Versace had on New Year’s Eve 1999. It was shortly after Jennifer Lopez said some nasty things in an interview about Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Apparently a bunch of celebrities were sitting around the dinning table and Jennifer Lopez walked in. Madonna took one look at her, stood up and said “party’s over”. She and Gwyneth then stormed out. How awesome is that?!
