Cannes Red Carpet

The Cannes Film Festival brings major excessive and lavish fashion to the red carpet like no other. Year and year, Dynasty and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1980s always seem to be sources of inspiration. Supermodels are also prevalent on the red carpet at Cannes. Whether it’s Cindy Crawford in 2013 or Kate Moss and Kendall Jenner this year, the world’s top models always bring it in terms of making a stylish impact on the red carpet and they help take the glamour factor to the next level on the French Riviera. Here’s a breakdown one some of the most talked about looks at Cannes this year.

Naomi Watts in Giorgio Armani Prive

This embellished lilac gown was stunning and I can only imagine how beautiful it looked in person. The look was styled perfectly with the Bulgari jewels (that necklace!), her side-parted slightly wavy hair and soft makeup.

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

Hands down one of the best dresses this year at Cannes and one of the best dresses Chastain has ever worn. It’s super luxurious and beautifully made. It looks like a gown from The Great Gatsby. Also well styled with the curls reminiscent of the 1920s and the Piaget jewelry. But don’t love the shoes. Platform satin open toe heels need to be retired.

Julia Roberts in Armani Privé

Surprisingly given her long Hollywood career, this was Roberts first time in Cannes. And she impressed in this custom Armani Privé gown paired with an unbelievable Chopard diamond and emerald necklace. If the dress looks familiar to you, it should. The design is a clever nod to Roberts’ most iconic roles and the one that turned her into a star. Remember the red dress in Pretty Woman?

Blake Lively in Atelier Versace

This isn’t the most original dress ever and it’s very Versace but it fits Lively perfectly and she looks pretty great. It’s hard to argue with this look. And well played with the hair and Lorraine Schwartz diamonds.

Julianne Moore in Alexander McQueen

This gold low cut Alexander McQueen gown was unbelievably good! Moore has had so many incredible red carpet looks and this is now one of my favourites. It’s a gorgeous and chic dress that was perfect for Cannes. I love the sheer details around the neckline and sleeves, and black panels on the skirt elongate the gown. Also, the long Chopard diamond earrings are amazing and her hair looked beautiful pulled back.

Amal Clooney in Atelier Versace

Leave it to Amal Clooney to make a Versace gown look so elegant (not a quality we typically associate with Versace). Clooney has amazing taste and she stunned on the red carpet and moved in the dress perfectly. Sometimes trains can be a little much but not at Cannes. And she has a natural stylish quality that makes it work.

Bella Hadid in Cavalli Couture

The dress was quite similar to Lively’s Atelier Versace above but Hadid wins and stunned in this nude crystal Cavalli Couture gown. The diamond collar necklace is a showstopper and perfect for Cannes. Also, she’s one of my favourite models today.

Kendall Jenner

Hands down one the best red carpet looks at Cannes this year. The top model slayed in this sheer black crystal embellished Cavalli Couture gown. Loved the way the hair was styled and the extra Chopard diamond chandelier earrings are everything.

Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé

It’s been a while since I’ve loved Dior on the beautiful french actress but this gold silk lame dress was super chic. Check out the black detail around the neckline. This was one of those looks that doesn’t screen “LOOK AT ME” but it’s a great looking dress that’s modern and elegant at the same time.

Kate Moss in Vintage Halston

The iconic supermodel doesn’t show up on red carpets very often. So it was exciting to see her this year at Cannes. Not surprised at all she wore vintage Halston. If she was around in the late 70s and 80s, she would have definitely been a Halston girl and a fixture at Studio 54. It’s not the best dress ever but she still looked lovely. I saw Moss recently in Toronto for a personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue and it was interesting. Her bone structure is incredible but she doesn’t really look like how you think she would. A little tough to be honest.

Kirsten Dunst in Gucci

A beautiful dress that was likely polarizing. I’m sure many people loved this silk organza gown with floral details while others hated it. This is one of those dresses that’s a little ahead its time. But Dunst has the kind of subversive tasted in fashion that she totally owned it.

Kendall Jenner in Mathieu Mirano

I wasn’t familiar with Mathieu Mirano but will definitely be watching him now because this blue satin jacket with black metallic fringe is incredible! It’s so chic. And it’s modern and fresh. Check out the detail on the sleeves. The midnight blue is a stunning colour and I loved how the look was styled with the simple ankle strap sandals, soft makeup and easy relaxed hair. This whole look is A+.

Susan Sarandon in Saint Laurent

I realize I’ve said a few times that the Cannes Film Festival is one of those places where you can be lavish, excessive and luxurious and not feel guilty about it. Where 1980s excess is embraced. But I still think Sarandon looks effortlessly chic in a black Saint Laurent pantsuit with a white button-down shirt. It’s a timeless look that’s just as cool today as it was when Yves Saint Laurent made the look so popular in the 1960s. The iconic actress looked great and you can tell she felt good as well.

Kendall Jenner in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Jenner had many steller looks this year at Cannes and this Elie Saab Haute Couture dress with matching jacket with feather detail was one of them. Sure it’s over the top but it’s Cannes where that’s basically encouraged. And there’s a glamourous 1960s quality to it that’s charming – and fancy.

Julianne Moore in a Givenchy

I usually love Moore’s style choices but there’s something about this Givenchy gown with cobra embellished detail that didn’t work form me. It’s one of the dresses that I where I understand the concept but not sure the execution worked. This was definitely an “almost but not quite” look.

Blake Lively in Vivienne Westwood Couture

I love that lively changed it up and chose a Vivienne Westwood Couture instead of another Versace gown but like Moore’s Givenchy dress above, I don’t love this dress as much as I should. It’s too Cinderella-y. And kind of 80s prom.

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham

This was Beckham’s first time at Cannes and unfortunately the look fell flat. I like the idea of a tuxedo inspired top and pants but nothing about this worked. The pants are way too long and it didn’t feel dressy enough. Beckham’s turned into a super talented designer and she only wears her own designs but she’s recently designed dresses that would have would have made way more sense than this outfit.

Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture

This is how you do a tuxedo on the red carpet. Theron stunned and majorly impressed in the classic YSL look. Loved everything about it. The open unbuttoned shirt, the pulled back hair parted in the middle and diamond necklace. One of the best looks this year at Cannes and once of my all time favourite looks on Theron. This is Yves Saint Laurent at its best.

Alessandra Ambrosio in Zuhair Murad Couture

Any where else other than Cannes, this would have been a bit much but the top model looked stunning – and expensive – in this strapless beaded jumpsuit and net-covered skirt. Loved the hair and strong red lips. And the Serpenti Bulgari diamond necklace is phenomenal! Side story: when I was in Paris in October I insisted my mom and I go to the bar at the Four Seasons George Cinq because it’s probably one the fanciest lobby bars in the world. And I sat next to gorgeous lady wearing the same necklace.

Well that’s a wrap. Maybe one day I’ll make to it Cannes for the film festival where I can see all the luxuriousness in person. After all, few people love FANCY as much as me.
